On Saturday 2nd November 2024, the National Seminar of the Turtle Guard Professional Interest from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Udayana University (FKH Unud) was successfully held at the Balai Guru Penggerak of Bali Province. The event was officially opened by the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Program of FKH Unud, Dr. drh. I Nengah Wandia, M.Si. A total of 150 participants that were not only students from Udayana University but also from Mandalika University of Education, Airlangga University, and Gadjah Mada University attended this event.

With the theme "Discover the Rest of the Ocean: Aquatic Veterinary 101”, this national seminar marked the inaugural program of the Turtle Guard Interest Group at FKH Unud. This event objective is to inspire and enhance students' interest and knowledge in pursuing careers in the aquatic veterinary field.

The event was divided into two main segments: a talk show in the morning and a workshop in the afternoon. The first segment featured a talk show with three distinguished speakers. The first topic, “Challenges and Opportunities: What is the Role and Significance of an Aquatic Veterinarian?” was presented by a Sea Turtle Conservation and Cetacean-Sirenian Specialist in Indonesia, drh. I Made Jaya Ratha, M.Sc. The second presentation was delivered by a lecturer at the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries (FKP) at Udayana University and a researcher in aquaculture, Made Dendy Pratama, M.Si., with the topic “Technology and Innovation in Aquatic Animal Health”.

The final presentation was given by drh. Citantyaning Kirana (drh. Citan), an aquatic veterinarian specializing in fish and the person behind the Instagram account @dokter.ikan.indonesia, titled “Inspirational Story: The Journey to Becoming an Aquatic Veterinarian”. In this presentation, she shared her experiences working in the field of aquatic animals and the various challenges she has encountered.

The talk show concluded with a 90-minute panel discussion titled “The Future of Aquatic Veterinarians in Indonesia,” where participants had the opportunity to ask questions to all three speakers. A large number of attendees were eager to ask questions to the speakers.

The second part, held in the afternoon, was a workshop with the theme “Zoom into Veterinary Ways: Fish Handling and Collecting Samples”. In this session, participants learned about handling, anesthesia, and the collection of blood, gill, fecal, and mucus samples from fish, guided by drh. Citan.

During the seminar, the committee provided food stalls and merchandise booths that participants could visit during break sessions. There was also a photo booth where attendees could take pictures.

Overall, the event ran smoothly despite some technical issues and minor delays. Participants appeared enthusiastic about the talk show and workshop sessions. It is hoped that after attending this seminar, participants will have a better understanding of aquatic veterinary medicine and be knowledgeable about how to handle and collect samples from fish.
