Collaboration between Veterinarians and Legislators: The Student Representative Council of Udayana University Successfully Holds a National Legislative Workshop
On Sunday, September 29, 2024, the Student Representative Council (DPM) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Udayana University (FKH Unud) successfully held the 2024 Legislative Workshop online via Zoom Meeting. with the theme “Collaboration between Students and Legislators to Enhance Conservation through Veterinary Legislation,” the event was attracted 125 participants from various universities in Indonesia, including Udayana University, Airlangga University, Hasanuddin University, Nusa Cendana University, Riau University, Syiah Kuala University, and Wijaya Kusuma University.
The workshop was held to address the urgent and ongoing issues of conservation, particularly in the field of veterinary medicine. A multidisciplinary expert in legislative and veterinary medicine, Colonel Kes. Purn. drh. Martha Mangapulina, S.H., M.H., was invited as the main speaker. She provided a comprehensive presentation on the role of veterinarians in the legislative process, challenges in conservation laws, and weaknesses in veterinary legislation in Indonesia. She also emphasized the importance of veterinary students involvement in monitoring draft laws (RUU) related to conservation and veterinary legislation.
Following this, the interactive discussion sessions led by moderators was a highlight of the event, where participants actively engaged in Focus Group Discussions (FGD) organized in groups. This FGD technique applied the Act and Learn method, where each group was given materials as the discussion subjects, which they then collaboratively addressed.
The online workshop was officially after a documentation session and closing session with all organizers and participants. The success of this event demonstrated the effectiveness of online platforms in organizing important discussions related to legislative and conservation issues, even though they are not conducted face-to-face.
Through this workshop, it is hoped that Veterinary Medicine students across Indonesia will become more aware of the importance legislative role in conservation. In addition, they are also expected to contribute not only through their veterinary expertise, but also with an in-depth understanding of relevant legislative aspects.
