Collaborating with Perlindungan Hukum Satwa Indonesia Foundation, FVM Unud Successfully Held a Seminar entitled Implementing the Welfare of Farmed Animals in Bali

The Perlindungan Hukum Satwa Indonesia Foundation, better known as Animals Don't Speak Human (ADSH), collaborated with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Udayana University in organize a seminar titled "Scoping Report: Implementasi Kesejahteraan Hewan yang Diternakkan dan Dampaknya Terhadap Kesehatan Lingkungan dan Masyarakat di Bali" on Tuesday, March 26th, 2024. The seminar are held offline in the Ruang Nusantara Lt. 4, Gedung Agrokomplek, Universitas Udayana, Kampus Sudirman. The event is officially opened by the Rector of Udayana University, Prof. Ir. Ngakan Putu Gede Suardana M.T., Ph.D.

The seminar is attended by 200 participants, including the Dinas Pertanian dan Ketahanan Pangan Provinsi Bali, Perhimpunan Dokter Hewan Indonesia (PDHI) Cabang Bali, various deans from faculties at Udayana University, several other invited guests, as well as students from various faculties at Udayana University.

The seminar features experienced speakers in their respective fields. The main speaker at this seminar was Mark Dia, a representative of World Animal Protection originating from Vietnam, who begins the seminar by presenting the topic "Moving The World for People, Animals, and Our Planet." Additionally, three other excellent speakers are also featured in this seminar, they are drh. Ni Wajan Leestyawati Palgunadi M.Si., Dr. drh. Kadek Karang Agustina M.P., and Fiolita Berandhini, S.H.



The seminar continued with a presentation on "Kondisi Pemenuhan Kesejahteraan Hewan Ternak Yang Diternakan di Bali” by drh. Ni Wajan Leestyawati Palgunadi, M.Si. This session discussed the community’s lack of understanding of the benefits of animal welfare and their insufficient appreciation for livestock as living beings."Kesejahteraan tidak terlalu mahal, tetapi tergantung cara kita memperlakukan hewan tersebut," said drh. Ni Wajan Leestyawati. She also recommended continuous education on animal welfare until it becomes a reality in society.

The third presentation was delivered by one of the lecturers from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Udayana University, Dr. drh. Kadek Karang Agustina M.P., with the theme "Scoping Report: Implementasi Kesejahteraan Hewan Ternak dan Dampaknya terhadap Kesehatan Masyarakat di Bali.” In This presentation, he also presented a report on the level of animal welfare in Bali that was researched by him and his team. He provided education to farmers on livestock care, maintaining health, and proper slaughtering techniques. Additionally, he also warned about the dangers of uncontrolled antibiotic use among farmers, supported by the fact that many farmers prefer to purchase antibiotics from e-commerce rather than directly from veterinarians.

The final presentation is titled "Scoping Report: Dampak Aktivitas Peternakan terhadap Kesehatan Lingkungan dan Kepatuhan Perizinannya di Bali" by Fiolita Berandhini S.H. In this presentation, emphasis is placed on the importance of environmental sanitation, which can affect the quality of livestock products. By improving the quality of livestock products, the selling price of these products can also increase.



The series of activities continued with a discussion session that was warmly received with enthusiasm. Participants and invited guests appeared actively engaged in asking questions, and their inquiries were well responded to by the speakers. The hope after attending this seminar is that participants and invited guests can understand the importance of animal welfare, the dangers of uncontrolled use antibiotics and antimicrobial in farming, and their impact on environmental health.
