Cattle Data Collection Activities and Vaccination for Foot and Mouth Diseases (FMD) in Batuan Kaler Village, Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency
The increase in the price of beef lately has begun to worry the public. Even before Eid al-Adha the price of beef in the market soared to Rp. 200,000 per kilogram as a result of the current epidemic of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). In addition to causing a spike in beef prices in the market, FMD also causes losses for farmers. Reporting from Republika, beef infected with FMD can only be sold at a price range of Rp. 40,000 per kilogram. In addition to causing the price of beef to become unstable, FMD also causes the demand for beef to decline as a result of the public's fear of consuming beef amid the FMD issue.
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is not a new threat because previously FMD had spread in Indonesia in 1887 and it took almost a century for the government to free Indonesia from the clutches of FMD. In 1990, the World Animal Health Organization (OIE) declared Indonesia free of FMD. After almost 36 years of silence, now FMD has resurfaced and this situation is quite overwhelming for the government due to the lack of preparation and facilities in dealing with FMD. The latest update from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) that the total number of FMD cases in Indonesia has reached 401,205 with details as many as 168,005 cattle have been declared cured and there are still 233,200 who have not recovered. A total of 4,427 cattle were subject to conditional slaughter and a total of 2,772 tails died (BNPB. Wednesday 20/07/2022). Therefore, to follow up on this phenomenon, the Indonesian government is intensively working on a vaccine program in all regions in Indonesia, it was recorded that as of July 20, a total of 554,351 livestock had been vaccinated.
The Ministry of Agriculture has activated the livestock vaccination program since last June as an effort to prevent the spread of the FMD virus. For now, the vaccination program is more focused on cows. In support of the government's efforts, UPTD PUSKESWAN Region III Gianyar Regency together with volunteers from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University and community service program (KKN) students carried out FMD vaccination activities and data collection for cattle in Batuan Kaler Village, Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency. The vaccination activity was carried out on Saturday, July 23, 2022 accompanied by village officials, Babinsa, and Babinkantipmas of Batuan Kaler Village. The activity started at 08.30 WITA and was divided into 3 areas covering area 1 in Banjar Cangi, area 2 in Banjar Blahtanah, and area 3 covering Banjar Sakah and Banjar Dauh Uma.
The results of the vaccination activities in Batuan Kaler Village recorded those 63 cows had been recorded and vaccinated against FMD. Furthermore, a booster vaccine will be given approximately one month later. This vaccination activity will be continued to the next villages for equal distribution of vaccinations in Bali. It is hoped that through this vaccination activity, people will be more aware of the dangers of FMD and know how to prevent FMD for their livestock. The biosecurity of the cage is also an important indicator as an effort to sterilize the cage and prevent the spread of the FMD virus so that later FMD cases can be more controlled and subside soon.
