BECOMING MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE CONSERVATION AND WELFARE OF PREDATORY BIRDS THROUGH THE ROTHSCHILDI NATIONAL SEMINAR 2024

Interest in the Profession (Minpro) of Rothschildi Wildlife at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Udayana University once again held the 2024 Rothschildi National Seminar 2024 on Saturday, May 4th, 2024. This year’s National Seminar Rothschildi raised the theme “Soaring Into The Sky, Looking Through The Predator's Eye” and took place offline in the Ruang Nusantara, Gedung Agrokomplek, Udayana University, Kampus Sudirman. The event was attended by the Vice Rector III of Udayana University, the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Udayana University, the Advisor of Minpro Rothschildi Wildlife, and 134 participants consisting of veterinary students from various universities in Indonesia, including Udayana University, Gadjah Mada University, Airlangga University, Bogor Agricultural Institute, Padjadjaran University, Brawijaya University, Wijaya Kusuma University, and Mandalika University of Education.

The Rothschildi National Seminar 2024 was officially opened by the Vice Rector III of Udayana University, Prof. Ir. I Ketut Sudarsana, S.T., Ph.D. He expressed his hope that this event could provide insights and awareness about the importance of preserving wildlife. “It is hoped that this activity can provide new insights into wildlife such as predatory birds and hopes that this activity will raise awareness to preserve wildlife, not only among veterinary students, but also in the wider community,” he said in the opening of the Rothschildi National Seminar 2024.

Similar to the previous year, this event was divided into two main segments, there are presentation sessions and workshop sessions. The presentation session consisted of three sessions delivered by three extraordinary speakers and experts in their fields. In the first session, the material was delivered by drh. Naufal Seta Kurnianta from Kamojang Eagle Conservation Centre with the topic “Get to Know the Birds of prey”. In the second session the material was delivered by dr. I Wayan Gede Wirawan, S. Ked., M.M., who is the owner of Owl Tower Bali with a topic entitled “What Expert Says About Owl”. The last material was delivered by Dr. drh. Slamet Raharjo, M.P., who is a lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Gadjah Mada University and Owlery Supervisor with material entitled “Artificial Insemination in Owl”. In essence, these three presentations covered the ins and outs of predatory birds, including their species, habitats, care methods, and medical treatment for predatory birds.

Before moving on to the next agenda, participants were given a 30-minute break for lunch and prayers. Various facilities were provided to fill the break time, such as food stalls, beverages, souvenirs, photo booth, and the Owl Tower Bali booth. The booth established by Owl Tower Bali provided an opportunity for participants and invited guests to interact directly with predatory birds.

After the break time ended, the activity continued with a workshop involving hands-on practice of artificial insemination procedures on predatory birds by the participants, guided by the speakers. This artificial insemination involved using quails as experimental animals, where participants injected male quail sperm into the reproductive tract of the female quail. The seminar ended with a documentation session.

The aim of this activity is to provide new insights into predatory birds and raise awareness about the importance of understanding wildlife conservation and their natural habitats. Additionally, it is hoped that this event will inspire participants, as future veterinarians, to actively engage in wildlife conservation through education, advocacy, and concrete actions.
