ULU Farm Pecatu Makes History as a Pioneer of Animal Welfare Certification in Badung: Producing Safe and Healthy Standard Eggs to Support Food Security and Tourism
The AWATARA Certification Unit (Animal Welfare Training, Research and Assessment), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, has conducted an animal welfare assessment as part of the animal welfare certification process for ULU Farm, a free-range layer farm owned by Bumdes Catu Kwero Sedana, located in Pecatu Village, South Kuta, Badung, Bali.
The assessment was carried out over two days, on January 8–9, 2026, at the ULU Farm facilities in Pecatu Village, Badung.
This certification process originated from an official request submitted by Bumdes Catu Kwero Sedana to AWATARA Udayana University on October 28, 2025, seeking guidance, training, and technical assistance in managing a free-range layer farming system that applies animal welfare standards.
For approximately two months, the AWATARA Assistance Team intensively accompanied the farmers to achieve animal welfare standards and to establish a welfare-oriented poultry management system, with the goal of producing eggs that are safe, healthy, and of high quality. On December 28, 2025, the assistance team reported to AWATARA that ULU Farm was ready to undergo the certification assessment.
Following this report, on January 5, 2026, the Head of the AWATARA Certification Unit, Dr. drh. Kadek Karang Agustina, MP., officially appointed five assessors to conduct the animal welfare assessment at ULU Farm. The assessor team was led by Prof. Dr. Drh. Nyoman Sadra Dharmawan, MS. This assessment aims to determine whether ULU Farm is eligible to receive the AWATARA Animal Welfare Certification.
During the assessment visit, the AWATARA team was officially welcomed by the Head of Pecatu Village (Perbekel), accompanied by the Bendesa, BPD, LPM, the Director and Management of Bumdes, village officials, the Family Welfare Movement Team (TP PKK), and the Youth Organization (Karang Taruna) of Pecatu Village.
In his remarks, the Head of Pecatu Village, I Made Karyana Yadnya, SE, expressed his highest appreciation to Udayana University, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the AWATARA Certification Unit for their continuous guidance and assistance to ULU Farm, enabling it to participate in this animal welfare certification process. He also expressed his hope that this collaboration will continue and be further strengthened in the future, considering the significant benefits and positive impacts felt by the local community.
Furthermore, it was stated that this certification process represents a very strategic initial step in supporting Bali’s tourism sector, particularly in Badung Regency, through the provision of internationally standardized animal-based food products, the quality of which is assured by an independent institution, in this case AWATARA Udayana University.
