The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, Conducts Community Service in Batu City: Research Downstreaming through Education and Field Practice to Improve Reproductive Health and Dairy Farm Management
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Udayana University carried out a Community Service activity in Batu City, East Java, in celebration of the 28th Anniversary of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the 42nd Anniversary of the Veterinary Medicine Family Association (BKKH). The activity adopted the main theme “Research Downstreaming through Education & Field Practice: Improving Reproductive Health & Dairy Farm Management.” This one-day event was held on October 30, 2025, at two locations: UD. Rekamandiri Cahaya Makmur in Tlengkung Village and the Margo Makmur Mandiri Cooperative in Brau Hamlet, Gunungsari Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City.
The activity involved lecturers, students, employees, and staff of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, along with local farming communities. In Tlengkung Village, the theme presented was “Counseling and Examination of Reproductive Disorders in Dairy Cattle,” with drh. I Wayan Sukernayasa, S.KH., M.Si. as the speaker. In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to maintaining reproductive health in dairy cattle. “Proper handling of reproductive disorders in dairy cattle includes improving nutrition, maintaining barn sanitation, detecting estrus, and regularly recording health and reproductive status,” he stated.
In addition to providing educational outreach, lecturers and students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, also directly engaged in fieldwork by conducting examinations and handling reproductive cases in dairy cattle owned by local farmers. This activity not only delivered immediate benefits to the community but also served as a valuable learning platform for students to apply their veterinary knowledge in practical, real-world settings.
Meanwhile, in Gunungsari Village, the community service program carried the theme “Biosecurity Education & Detection of Subclinical Mastitis for Milk Product Safety in Efforts to Maintain Food Safety,” with drh. Romy Muhammad Dary Mufa, S.KH., M.Si. as the speaker. In his presentation, Dr. Romy emphasized that the implementation of biosecurity measures in dairy farming is crucial in preventing the spread of diseases that can reduce both the quality and quantity of milk production. “Consistent implementation of biosecurity will protect livestock from disease and ensure the safety of milk products for consumers,” he said.
As part of the program, the FKH Unud team also conducted examinations for subclinical mastitis using the California Mastitis Test (CMT). Cattle that tested positive were treated with antibiotics and vitamins as needed, as a preventive measure to maintain optimal milk production.
The Chairman of the Margo Makmur Mandiri Cooperative, Muhammad Munir, expressed his appreciation for the program. “We hope this community service activity provides positive feedback for the community, so that the implementation of biosecurity in daily milking activities can be carried out properly, ensuring that livestock are protected from harmful diseases and that milk production remains stable,” he said.
This community service activity conducted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, in Batu City represents a tangible implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the area of community service. Through activities that integrate research outcomes, education, and field practice, the faculty remains committed to contributing to the improvement of farmers’ welfare, maintaining animal health, and ensuring the safety of animal-based food products for the community.
