FVM Udayana University Signs Cooperation Agreement with Pecatu Village to Develop an Animal Welfare–Based Model Village
Pecatu, January 15, 2026 — The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University (FVM Unud), officially signed a cooperation agreement with Pecatu Village as a partner village in the Development of an Animal Welfare–Based Village as a Model for the Integration of Food Security, Food Safety, and Sustainable Veterinary Education.
The agreement was signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, the Head of Pecatu Village (Perbekel), and the Head of the AWATARA Unit of Udayana University, and was witnessed by representatives of the Regent of Badung and the Rector of Udayana University. The event was held in conjunction with the Launching of Ulu Free Range Layer Farm and the handing over of the Animal Welfare Certificate, in celebration of National Village Day, on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
The event was attended by the Regent of Badung, represented by the Assistant I of Badung Regency, officials of the Badung Regency Government, the Head of Pecatu Village and his staff, members of the Badung Regency Parliament (DPRD) from Pecatu Village, the Rector of Udayana University represented by the Head of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), the Head of BRIDA Badung Regency, the Head of the Agriculture and Food Service, the Head of the Fisheries Service, the Head of South Kuta District, as well as various village-level forums. Also present were the Head and Team of the AWATARA Certification Unit of Udayana University, partner institutions, and other invited guests.
In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, Dr. drh. I Gusti Ngurah Sudisma, M.Si, stated that this cooperation aims to make Pecatu Village a model for the development of an animal welfare–based partner village, integrating the aspects of food security, food safety, and sustainable veterinary education. “This is a tangible manifestation of Udayana University’s commitment, especially that of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, not only to play a role in the academic field, but also to be present and provide direct impacts on rural communities, both socially and economically,” he said.
Through the AWATARA Team of Udayana University, FVM Unud has been providing assistance to Pecatu Village, particularly in guiding the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) to develop a food security business in the form of Ulu Farm, a free-range layer chicken farm producing premium-quality eggs. These products are intended to support the needs of the tourism sector in Pecatu, Nusa Dua, Kuta, and Badung Regency in general.
The AWATARA Team not only provides technical assistance in production, but also ensures the implementation of good, safe, healthy, and ethical farming practices. Through the animal welfare certification process, consumers are assured that the eggs they consume are not only safe and healthy, but are also produced with due consideration for animal welfare principles.
FVM Unud also expressed its appreciation to Pecatu Village as a pioneer in developing animal welfare–certified products initiated and developed by the village using village funds. This initiative is considered a visionary step and is expected to serve as a model for other villages, both in Badung Regency and in Bali in general.
The momentum of National Village Day was considered very appropriate to reaffirm that villages are not merely objects of development, but rather subjects and driving forces of development. The demand from both the community and the tourism sector for high-quality, safe, healthy, and certified animal-based food products continues to increase, which in turn will have a positive impact on added value and the welfare of rural communities.
FVM Unud hopes that this cooperation will be sustainably implemented and will provide broad benefits for the community, the education sector, and the future development of Bali.
