From Village Innovation to Market Recognition: AWATARA Supports Ulu Farm in Advancing Farm Animal Welfare

AWATARA, through the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Udayana (FKH UNUD), supported Ulu Farm in promoting and selling free-range eggs during the two-day BRImo Nusa Dua Eco Market in Bali on 8–9 August 2026.

The activity provided an opportunity to engage directly with local residents and international visitors and introduce them to farm animal welfare and higher-welfare poultry farming. Many visitors showed interest in how the chickens were raised, the meaning of free-range farming, and the connection between animal welfare and the eggs they consume.

Ulu Farm is also an example of village-based innovation in Pecatu Village, where higher-welfare poultry farming has been incorporated into local development initiatives. With support and technical assistance from AWATARA, Ulu Farm has been developing its farm animal welfare practices and strengthening its potential to provide higher-welfare poultry products to the market.

The farm’s participation in the Mangupura Award assessment by the Badung Regency Government represents an important recognition of this progress. It demonstrates that farm animal welfare can become part of broader village innovation and sustainable development, while also providing greater visibility for farmers who are adopting higher-welfare practices.

The development of Ulu Farm highlights the role of AWATARA not only in promoting animal welfare, but also in supporting farmers to translate animal welfare principles into practical farming systems and connect these practices with market and community opportunities.

Beyond product promotion, AWATARA used the event as a platform for public education and conversation about responsible poultry production and the importance of supporting farms that prioritise animal welfare. The activity also demonstrated how collaboration between local government, village initiatives, farmers, consumers and animal welfare organisations can help create greater recognition, market opportunities and support for higher-welfare farming in Bali.
