AWATARA of Udayana University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Conducts Animal Welfare Certification at Three Cage-Free Layer Farms in Tabanan

Tabanan — The AWATARA (Animal Welfare Training, Research and Assessment) Certification Unit of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University (FVM Udayana), conducted animal welfare certification activities at three cage-free layer chicken farms located in Tabanan Regency, Bali, on Friday (May 23, 2026).

This activity was part of an effort to ensure that the farming systems implemented by the farms comply with farm animal welfare standards in accordance with the cage-free layer farming guidelines established by AWATARA.

The three farms participating in the certification process were PT Cahya Adi Surya Indonesia, Lestari Farm, and Racas Farm.

Through this certification process, AWATARA carried out a comprehensive assessment of the implementation of animal welfare principles, including housing systems, farm management, animal health, and the fulfillment of the natural behavioral needs of laying hens raised under cage-free systems.

The activity commenced with an opening session and briefing delivered by Dr. drh. Kadek Karang Agustina, MP, Chair of AWATARA at Udayana University. In her remarks, she emphasized that animal welfare certification represents a shared commitment to establishing livestock production systems that are not only productive but also attentive to ethical considerations and animal welfare. The implementation of animal welfare standards is expected to improve the quality of livestock products while providing assurance to consumers that the products originate from farms that adhere to animal welfare principles.

Subsequently, Prof. Dr. drh. Nyoman Sadra Dharmawan, MS, Head Assessor of AWATARA at Udayana University, provided technical guidance regarding the assessment mechanisms to be carried out by the assessor teams. He emphasized that the certification process is conducted objectively and based on the standards and assessment indicators established by AWATARA for cage-free layer farming systems.

Following the opening session, the activity continued with the division of three assessor teams, each assigned to conduct evaluations at PT Cahya Adi Surya Indonesia, Lestari Farm, and Racas Farm. The assessor teams conducted direct observations of housing conditions, livestock management practices, animal health and behavior, biosecurity systems, and various other aspects serving as indicators in the animal welfare assessment.

Through this activity, AWATARA sought to ensure that farms undergoing the certification process have genuinely implemented management systems that allow hens to express their natural behaviors, receive adequate feed and water, remain free from unnecessary pain and stress, and be provided with an environment that optimally supports their welfare.

The certification activity concluded with the presentation of the assessment report, which included field findings, evaluations of the implementation of animal welfare standards, and recommendations for improvements to be undertaken by each farm.

The assessment results will subsequently serve as the basis for determining the animal welfare certification status of the three farms evaluated.

Through this activity, AWATARA of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, continues to demonstrate its commitment to promoting the development of animal welfare-based layer farming in Bali as part of efforts to enhance food safety, improve the quality of livestock products, and realize sustainable and ethical production systems.
