Aquatic Training Camp Minpro Rothschildi 2025: An Educational Program for Turtle and Marine Mammal Rescue Combined with Recreational Activities
The Wildlife Professional Interest (Minpro) Rothschildi, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University (FKH Unud), once again conducted the Aquatic Training Camp (ATC) under the theme “Sea of Kindness: Enriching Marine Lives through Rescue and Recovery”, held on Saturday–Sunday, 20–21 December 2025, offline at Umah Lumba Center, Buleleng, Bali. This activity was attended by the Advisor of Minpro Rothschildi, drh. Putu Suandhika, M.Sc., a representative of the Student Executive Board of FKH Unud, Nathania Viany, a representative of Minpro Rothschildi, Diva Putri Aurellia Syaefudin, as well as 21 participants who were students of Udayana University and Gadjah Mada University.
The agenda of activities on the first day was filled with lecture sessions and workshops. This activity presented four outstanding speakers, namely the Head Veterinarian of Umah Lumba Center as well as a wildlife veterinarian and alumnus of FKH Unud, drh. Deny Rahmadani, M.Si., the Education Coordinator of Umah Lumba Center, Elif Ivana Hendastari, drh. Farida Ulya, and Putu Feny Wahyu Lestari. In the first material session, drh. Deny Rahmadani explained Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN). Meanwhile, Elif Ivana Hendastari introduced Umah Lumba Center along with its roles and activities in marine wildlife conservation. The activity continued with the second material delivered by drh. Farida Ulya on the topic of sea turtles, as well as Putu Feny Wahyu Lestari on first aid for stranded marine mammals. In this session, a demonstration of first aid techniques for cases of stranded dolphins and sea turtles was also conducted as part of the material delivery.
After the material session, the activity continued with a workshop guided by drh. Deny Rahmadani, M.Si. The workshop included practice of injection techniques on marine mammals using sandals as a simulation medium, as well as a cooperative handling simulation. In the cooperative handling simulation, participants learned how to perform proper restraint during blood sampling or drug injection in dolphins to minimize stress on the animals. This session was then followed by a discussion of marine wildlife handling cases. In the evening, participants took part in a series of bonding night activities which included film screening, cooking together, games, and ended with rest.
The series of activities continued on the second day, beginning with breakfast, followed by the division of boat groups and a briefing for snorkeling activities. Participants were divided into five boats, each accompanied by one guide. Next, participants headed to the snorkeling location on foot, then continued the journey by boat to Menjangan Island with a travel time of approximately 30 minutes. Snorkeling activities were carried out at two locations, namely Mangrove Spot and Menjangan Spot, with a duration of approximately one hour each. In addition to snorkeling activities, participants also visited Menjangan Island to observe deer and rest for approximately 45 minutes. After the entire series of snorkeling activities was completed, participants returned to Umah Lumba Center for a communal meal and to clean up.
The ATC activity was then continued with a closing session and the handover of certificates to the Umah Lumba Center, followed by a documentation session. As a closing, the activity ended with cleaning the activity area before all participants and committee members returned to the Dean’s Office of FKH Unud, Jimbaran. Overall, the ATC 2025 series of activities ran smoothly. This was reflected in the enthusiasm of the participants throughout the activities, especially during the discussion sessions, despite several minor technical challenges.
